An Ode to my Heritage
When my land we call now Guyana, was colonized by Great Britain in 1796, they plundered artifacts from the indigenous tribes. One of these tribes were the Arawaks, where I decent from. These artifacts are now still on display behind glass, at the British Museum, London.
This work is about my heritage that is still in the hands of our colonizers and not in the hands of the original people. I am reclaiming the art of my ancestors and place it where it belongs. By looking at the artifacts in photos, I am using my hands to create and reappropriate what once was ours.
